Student Assembly 2020

The TSPTA Student Assembly (which is usually part of the TPTA Annual Conference) will be happening on Zoom from 3:00-4:30 p.m. on October 10th, 2020. And it will be free. Be on the lookout for a registration link coming soon. 

Student Bowl 2020

 

PT and PTA students! Join us for the first ever online Student Bowl this year during the TPTA Conference Student Assembly on October 10th at 2 pm. Gather a few of your classmates and compete against students from all across Texas in a Jeopardy style showdown to test your PT knowledge. 

Each team can be made of 2-4 people. We have created a weighted point system to help with this.

1st years: 1 point

2nd years: 2 points

3 years: 3 points. 

Maximum 6 points per team(I.e. four 1st years on a team for 4 points total or two 3rd 

years for 6 points total or any combination in between.)

 

Prizes will include visa gift cards and TSPTA swag!

 

 

What Will This Student Bowl Look Like?

 

We are using an online platform called Factile with Zoom so that players can interact with their teammates and participate in the game play. Each player will need access to their own electronic device like a phone, tablet or computer to buzz in and answer questions remotely. 

A full set of rules and expectations will be sent out to participants on Oct 6^th, 2020.

Here, we highlight APTA Oncology, an academy of the American Physical Therapy Association.    Engage APTA Live: PT-PTA Teams Hosts Yusra Iftikhar, DPT, director of communications, and Scotti Gamboa, SPTA, director of SPTA relations, both on the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors, talked about PT-PTA teamwork, collaboration, and more with guests Christine Davidson, PT, DPT, and Nanako Barry, PTA, CBIS. Christine and Nanako, who won the APTA Outstanding PT-PTA Team Award for their exceptional teamwork and collaboration, discussed their model for success and answered questions.    Navigating the Job Market During a Pandemic: Part 2 The American Council of Academic Physical Therapy's Student Leadership Development Committee will be hosting a second Facebook Live event to help recent graduates navigate the job market during these challenging times.    APTA's National Student Conclave Goes Virtual in 2020 In the interest of safety related to COVID-19, we are replacing our in-person NSC scheduled for November 5-7 in Austin with a virtual event. Details about virtual NSC will be available in September.    APTA Student Core Ambassador Spotlight As the APTA Student Assembly Core Ambassador for Florida and a member of the APTA Student Assembly Advocacy Project Committee, Alyse Hausman, SPT, assisted programs across the country and in Florida in organizing National Advocacy Dinners this Spring. Five dinners were planned in Florida when COVID-19 required in-person events to be cancelled or transitioned to virtual events. Alyse and other Florida members of the Advocacy Project Committee (Riyad Mohommad, PT, DPT, and Marino Bucci, SPT), planned a statewide virtual dinner. Guest speakers included FPTA President Jamie Dyson, PT, DPT, who spoke about current state and national advocacy efforts over the past year. The event had over 125 attendees including students, clinicians, and members of both the FPTA and APTA boards of directors. Great job, Alyse!     Note from the Vice President In the beginning stages of quarantine in March I remember looking forward to being reunited with all of my #PTFam at the APTA House of Delegates and APTA's NEXT conference in Arizona in June. When those meetings transitioned to a virtual format I was not surprised or even that disappointed. I was impressed by APTA’s ability to adapt, eager to participate in this new way of learning and excited that it would be accessible to so many more students. However, the transition to virtual formats of both APTA National Student Conclave and APTA Combined Sections Meetings have hit me differently.     NSC would have been the last time for the 2019-2020 Student Assembly Board of Directors to meet in person and interact face to face with many of the students that we have worked so closely with over this last year. And as for CSM, I was so looking forward to the grand celebrations for APTA’s Centennial. I understand and support these decisions, but it is not an easy pill to swallow. I’ve had to remind myself that it is ok to be disappointed about this, but I must remain engaged and continue to be an active member and advocate for our profession, our communities, and our patients. Greg Hicks, PT, PhD, FAPTA, argues that a more diverse physical therapy workforce is the key to the profession's long-term sustainability, and to improved outcomes.    Maley Lecture: Cancer Rehabilitation: Insights On the Future of Our Practice Nicole Stout, PT, DPT, FAPTA, delivered the 25th Maley Lecture as part of Virtual NEXT. Her lecture focuses on implementation of prospective surveillance models as she challenges PTs and PTAs with the question, "Why are we waiting?"     Student Spotlight: The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy APTA sections are your link to the resources you need to stay current in expertise areas, and the best way to connect with others who share your interests. The 18 APTA sections focus on a wide range of areas, from specific types of physical therapy to broader policy areas and patient populations. No matter your interest, there's probably a section for you. Here, we highlight the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. As many of us are scrambling to figure out clinical assignments, watching lectures on zoom, and trying to study from our couches, we wanted to take a moment to talk about mental health and self-care.    Navigating the Job Market During a Pandemic The American Council of Academic Physical Therapy's Student Leadership Development Committee will be hosted a live Facebook event to help recent graduates navigate the job market during these challenging times.    APTA's Virtual NEXT Registration Open Thru July 31 APTA members get access to more than 20 courses with related CEUs, plus several special recorded sessions and live online events, for only $20.    APTA Student Core Ambassador Spotlight This June, APTA Colorado Core Ambassador Haley Anderson put on a virtual webinar to address racial disparities in the physical therapy profession at patient, provider, and policy levels. Haley, along with previous APTA Colorado Core Ambassador and fellow classmate Johnny Herrera, hosted this virtual conversation with a panel of five clinicians who shared their perspectives on this topic. Students, faculty, and practicing clinicians from Colorado and other states were present and contributed with live questions. Congrats, Haley!    Note from the Vice President As a recent graduate of the class of 2020 I am learning how to navigate the field of physical therapy in a time when many things are uncertain, and policies and plans are constantly changing. This has been quite a challenge for me because consistency is my comfort zone, and we are far from that.     During my short time as a #FreshPT I have been pushed out of my comfort zone quicker than I ever would have imagined. As uncomfortable as this may be, I’ve grown to appreciate the drive to learn in new ways.     I truly believe that I, and all of you, will come out on the other side of this as stronger PTs and PTAs who are capable and eager to face unforeseen obstacles. The resiliency and adaptability that I have seen demonstrated in my peers throughout the past several months have made me proud to be a part of this profession.
