APTA Student Core Ambassador Update

Texas CA Updates:

TSPTA is hosting a T-shirt Fundraiser in order to provide student scholarships to conferences such as CSM, TPTA, and Federal Advocacy Form. Shipping is available starting at $1.49. 


TSPTA would like to recognize all 2020 DPT/PTA graduates! We are wishing you all the best in your future endeavors and hope to hear of the great things each of you will be doing within our profession.  


The Kansas City Physical Therapy Association Special Interest Group has decided to postpone the Midwest Student Conclave to 2021. They are conducting a survey to gather information from students that might aid them should learning become a key part of DPT and PTA curriculum.


APTA updates:
Inform
Greg Hicks, PT, PhD, FAPTA, argues that a more diverse physical therapy workforce is the key to the profession's long-term sustainability, and to improved outcomes.
  
Nicole Stout, PT, DPT, FAPTA, delivered the 25th Maley Lecture as part of Virtual NEXT. Her lecture focuses on implementation of prospective surveillance models as she challenges PTs and PTAs with the question, "Why are we waiting?"

The 18 APTA sections focus on a wide range of areas, from specific types of physical therapy to broader policy areas and patient populations. Life as a student is stressful and demanding even in the most normal scenario. Now, add a global pandemic. As many of us are scrambling to figure out clinical assignments, watching lectures on zoom, and trying to study from our couches, we wanted to take a moment to talk about mental health and self-care.
  

Navigating the Job Market During a Pandemic

The American Council of Academic Physical Therapy's Student Leadership Development Committee will be hosted a live Facebook event to help recent graduates navigate the job market during these challenging times.
  
APTA members get access to more than 20 courses with related CEUs, plus several special recorded sessions and live online events, for only $20.
  
APTA Student Core Ambassador Spotlight
This June, APTA Colorado Core Ambassador Haley Anderson put on a virtual webinar to address racial disparities in the physical therapy profession at patient, provider, and policy levels. Haley, along with previous APTA Colorado Core Ambassador and fellow classmate Johnny Herrera, hosted this virtual conversation with a panel of five clinicians who shared their perspectives on this topic. Students, faculty, and practicing clinicians from Colorado and other states were present and contributed with live questions. Congrats, Haley!
  

Note from the Vice President

As a recent graduate of the class of 2020 I am learning how to navigate the field of physical therapy in a time when many things are uncertain, and policies and plans are constantly changing. This has been quite a challenge for me because consistency is my comfort zone, and we are far from that. 
  
During my short time as a #FreshPT I have been pushed out of my comfort zone quicker than I ever would have imagined. As uncomfortable as this may be, I’ve grown to appreciate the drive to learn in new ways. 
  
I truly believe that I, and all of you, will come out on the other side of this as stronger PTs and PTAs who are capable and eager to face unforeseen obstacles. The resiliency and adaptability that I have seen demonstrated in my peers throughout the past several months have made me proud to be a part of this profession. Keep pushing — you’ve got this!

ACAPT Job Market Info Session (July 14,2020) / Midwest Student Conclave

Good afternoon,

In response to COVID-19, the American Council for Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) created a task force to assist students and new graduates. One of the products of this task force was a series of recorded interviews and an upcoming live Facebook event regarding how the PT job market has been impacted by COVID-19 and what that means for students entering the workforce soon. The FB event is July 14th at 8:30 PM Eastern on the ACAPT FB page. See below for details and links.
ACAPT's Student Leadership Development Committee interviewed managers, clinicians and recruiters from diverse practice settings across the nation to provide insight on the current and future perspective of the PT job market.
Topics discussed include:
  • Virtual interview tips,
  • Negotiating salary and benefits and
  • How to market your value as a new grad to clinics, travel companies, skilled nursing facilities and hospitals.

Each year the SSIG plans and hosts a conference for students in the Midwest called the Midwest Student Conclave.

In the past, students have expressed interest in attending this conference from Texas.

The Chairperson for APTA Kansas' Student Special Interest Group (SSIG) would like to collect information about Texas students interest in this conference with the current COVID-19 circumstances. The SSIG would like to maintain alignment with other physical therapy conferences while providing the best experience possible for our fellow students.

This survey attempts to gather information about attendance for the conference. Ultimately, the SSIG is trying to gauge if students would feel comfortable with an in-person conference at any time this year. Please click the link below to fill out the survey.
